Sponsorship Committee

The Sponsorship committee is sincerely appreciative of the outstanding efforts of the Fundraising Committee who, under the leadership of Kent Ochel, have raised the funds we use to fund efforts to help needy people in our community.  Great job!

We’ve had an active month.  Jon Koch has completed the arrangements for 6-year-old Adil Khan to have tube placement surgery.  Jon has worked closely with Dr. Tamez and the Round Rock Hospital to arrange discounted surgical services for Adil.  We’ll give you an update as soon as the surgery is completed.  The relationship Jon has formed with the Hospital has led us to new opportunities.  Members of the Sponsorship Committee recently met with Elizabeth Muenzler and Carmen Votah from the Hospital to offer our services and coordinate our efforts to help speech and hearing impaired people.

We have also arranged for a local resident, Christina Ouellette, to visit the University of Texas Speech and Hearing Center for an evaluation.  Ms. Ouellette has suffered from a significant hearing impairment for many years, and has not been able to afford an assessment or hearing aides.  She will visit UT on 4/26/02 and we’ll continue to work with her to get her the help she needs.

Mike Luscier always does a great job coordinating the Club’s support of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.  This effort has grown to be a major Round Rock event and Sertoma has once again contributed $500.  We hope to see many of you at the Dell Diamond Friday April 26, from 7 pm to 10 am the following day.  Form a Relay team!

The Williamson County YMCA does an outstanding job for our community.  The Partner’s of Youth Fund is used to sponsor after school and childcare services for families unable to obtain those services on their own.  Our own Charlie Culpepper chairs the YMCA Board that has expanded the Y’s programs to meet the needs of our growing community.  Over 40,000 people participated in YMCA programs in the last year.  The Sertoma Board recently approved a $1,000 donation to support YMCA youth programs.

Chief Paul Conner of the Round Rock Police Department recently asked us to assist the Department’s Explorer Program with a $250 donation.  The Explorer Program, made up of 18 Explorer’s and 8 advisors, works to involve and educate local students in law enforcement.  They plan to attend the Explorer National Competition in Flagstaff Arizona later this year and requested funds to partially offset travel expenses.  We were happy to help.

Last, but certainly not least, we continue our work with RRISD.  Vickie Johnson, who serves on our Committee, has worked with teachers and administrators involved with RRISD’s Speech and Hearing Program o develop a list of needed equipment and supplies.  This list will be discussed at our next Committee meeting on April 8.  Vickie is also arranging a presentation at one of our Tuesday morning meetings to let each of us know the positive impact we are having in our schools.
