Attendence & Member News

During September Sertoma members achieved 64.4% attendance to regular Tuesday morning meetings. This is good but our goal is 70%.  Make-up’s can be earned by attending our Board of Directors meeting or another Sertoma Club meeting.  The following 26 members achieved perfect attendance in September (after make-up meetings):

Fred Adams Kristi Bayer Bill Beare
Bill Buckler Wes Carlson Charlie Culpepper
Matt Carson Richard Prete Marvin Felux
Russell Gallahan Dottie Gill Tom Gill
Dennis Graffious Jim Greene Kim Haugen
Rufus Honeycutt Fred Knorre Jon Koch
Mark Meyer Norm Noffsinger Mike Parker
Ann Shove Bruce Shove Bill Von Rosenberg
Mike Whelpley Cliff Woisin

The Attendance Committee calls folks who miss meetings. The purpose of the call is to encourage attendance and show Club support.  As a result of the calls, we discovered that several of our members had health issues. Lara McKeown had back surgery to correct a ruptured disk. Vince Soorholtz had surgery to remove 14 inches of his colon. Don Bonner had gall bladder surgery. Dottie Gill suffered from a neck injury. Ann Shove missed a meeting while her daughter was giving birth.

We also learned that many of our members were traveling all over the world. Art and Rose Zavala were in Anchorage, Alaska visiting family. Karl Hanner was selling hotdogs in a concession stand in Tennessee. Ron and Jan Gorman celebrated their 30th Anniversary while on an Alaskan cruise. Kent and Sylvia Ochel and Marvin and Maxene Felux toured Quebec, Canada and Gaspe Peninsula. Dr. and Ellen Macauley went fishing while at the Grand Canyon. Alan McGraw went to a wedding in Bolivia. Joe Schaeffer attended an amusement ride convention in Las Vegas. Dave Mclaury has been driving all over the nation. Christina Hanson was at a convention in Virginia. Kent Ochel attending his 45th high school reunion in Kansas. These are fun and interesting happenings. We might miss some, so please keep me informed as to what is going on.

How Do I Know if I Have a Hearing Loss?

For Adults - For Children -
bulletYou frequently complain that people mumble, speech is not clear, or you hear only parts of conversations when people are talking.
bulletYou often ask people to repeat what they said.
bulletYour friends or relatives tell you that you don't seem to hear very well.
bulletYou do not laugh at jokes because you miss too much of the story.
bulletYou need to ask others about the details of a meeting that you just attended.
bulletOthers say that you play the TV or radio too loudly.
bulletYou cannot hear the doorbell or the telephone.
bulletYou find that looking at people when they talk to you makes it somewhat easier to understand, especially when you're in a noisy place or where there are competing conversations.
bulletYour child is inconsistently responding to sound
bulletLanguage and speech development is delayed
bulletSpeech is unclear.
bulletSound is turned up on electronic equipment (radio, TV, cd player, etc.)

Success Story !!!

Jett Bay is pictured here with his parents Matthew and Jill Bay. Jett was diagnosed with a hearing impairment not long after birth. The Bays “discovered” our Club last Christmas when they came to our Christmas Tree lot. They were given information about our services and followed up with an application for support to have Jett fitted with bilateral hearing aids.

Jill was the featured speaker at a recent meeting and shared the wonderful news that Jett is hearing well and his speech and language development are on target! Those attending were entertained with a very lively, sweet, and verbal little boy. He was a joy to see!

Jett has been chosen to be the poster child for the Austin Diagnostic Center and their outreach program for early detection of hearing impairments. The family has agreed to allow Sertoma to use the poster at our Christmas Tree lot. They have also generously offered to be available for future speaking engagements to support our work.
