Leadership Takes “Servantship”

John Maxwell is a highly respected leader in the spiritual and business world and has written many books on leadership.  In his newest book The Journey from Success to Significance he reflects on leaders and there may be meaning for members of Sertoma…”Once you find them...How to Lead them”.  Leadership of a team or committee or the entire Sertoma Team is the highest expression of servant leadership.  Team leadership embodies each of the principals of servant leadership:

bullet

You must humble yourself in order to build a team.  Humility allows you to see the need for others.  Pride insists on working alone.

bullet

You cannot seek a position and have the team succeed.  Following Jesus keeps you on mission and out of competition with others.

bullet

You must be willing to give up your personal right to be served and find greatness in service to the mission and the other team members.

bullet

You must trust that God is in control of your life in order to risk service to  those on the team.

bullet

You must take up the towel of service to meet the needs of the group.

bullet

You must share both responsibility and authority with team members in order to meet the greater need of the team’s goals.

bullet

You must multiply your leadership by empowering other members of the team to lead.

C. Gene Wilkes (Jesus on Leadership)

Reflection upon what we do as Sertomans truly indicates the deep need we have to be servants to lead and serve others... to help them hear, to give them better health, to teach the youth about our great country, to build others who will lead with a servant attitude, and to sow the seeds of the Golden Rule.

Sertoma Spotlight

As this new Sertoma year opens, we, the new board members would like to reintroduce a program called the Sertoma Spotlight.

Sertoma Spotlight is an opportunity for all Sertomans to get better acquainted with our membership.  It gives new members a feeling of connectedness with the club and gives older members a chance to tap into the energy and enthusiasm of the “newbies”.

Each week, two of us will “introduce” each other by spending enough time together to learn a few interesting tidbits of information about us.  We will draw two names at the same time as we draw for the money pot and the next week those two will have 2 minutes each to introduce us to the group.

There will be more on this at a future meeting and we will provide you with some questions for you to ask your partner to get you started.

With over 30 new members in the last 3 years, there is a lot we can learn about each other!
