Texas Mission of Mercy Report

I was so pleased by the support the Sertoma membership provided for the November, 2004 Texas Mission of Mercy event at the Dell Diamond.  Many of our members showed up for setup on Thursday as well as performing a number of roles during the actual event.  Mayor Nyle Maxwell opened the Thursday orientation with a welcome to all volunteers and asked for service for those in need of care and we certainly answered the call!

I want to thank Vicki Johnson for being the Round Rock representative for the hearing testing, Charlie Culpepper for being the chairperson for supply, procurement, and distribution, and Tino Hernandez and Rufus Honeycutt for being the co-chairpersons for the translators.  Also, thanks to all our members who volunteered as ambassadors to help patients find their way around the facility and those computer savvy folks who helped us keep up with recording and charting.

The Dell Diamond made a huge donation with the use of a great facility and much help during the months of preparation.  Our club and several businesses donated more than $30,000 to provide the funds needed to put on this event.  I can't imagine what we would have done without all this help.  We saw 900 dental patients in the two day event and provided over $300,000 in dental care.  Since 2001, when the first Texas Mission of Mercy was held in Tyler, Texas, the organization has provided more than $2,000,000 in free dental care to about 6,000 Texans in need.  We have been privileged to host two TMOM's in Williamson County - Georgetown and Round Rock.  Next year's event will be held October 21st & 22nd in the Burnet - Marble Falls area.  If you can make it, you will also feel the warmth and well being from being a volunteer for those who need the most.

Letter from Our Russian Zoi Serteens
(contributed by Norm Nofzinger, Round Rock Sertoma Club Serteen Coordinator)

Dear Norm,

Glad to hear from you. In the beginning I would like inform you that my city is on the big river, but the thing is it is rather shallow. As far as mountains is concerned the Ural mountains are rather low here and practically there are no high rocks, my city located not far from Samara or Ufa. I can say that my city is not rather big by Russian standards, the population is about 600 000 people. Nowadays the city is rapidly changing. Our city is a very multinational. People of different nationalities live in our city.

Our lyceum has got a lot of different traditions. Now the students are getting ready for the scientific conference. The students make scientific researches and reports and they try to present them. The conference will be attended by many guests from different universities.

As for my graduation, I do not worry, because my post will be taken by a very good person, the are a lot of good people in our lyceum.

Dear Norm, in Russia all boys past school try enter in university, otherwise they go serve in army.
