Chairman’s Comments

Kim, working hard at the Christmas Tree Lot while his son, Jake, stands watch.

Being a member of the Round Rock Sertoma Club has been a great experience for me.

I came to Round Rock in 1991 and quickly got active in a number of Austin service organizations as a representative of my employer.  The work was OK, we did some good things, but I never really got to know many of the people I worked with.  I suppose it was a “work thing” for all of us. Something we checked off our list and moved on to the next issue.

Then one evening while attempting to play bridge (my wife can play, I just tag along), Marvin Felux and Kent Ochel mentioned Sertoma and invited me to attend.  They can, as you know be pretty convincing, so the next Tuesday morning, I headed for an early morning meeting at Bob’s Bar-B-Que (where Sertoma used to meet).  What I found there was a group of people who appeared to enjoy the time they spent together giving back to the community. It didn’t take much convincing to join the Club.

In the 10 years before joining Sertoma, I could count my non-work-related friends on one hand.  I was clueless as to what was going on in Round Rock (yes, some would say I’m still clueless).  Today, I have many friends away from work and know a lot more about what goes on in the community where I live.

I have also learned a lot about people - The folks in need of our help, the way we work together on projects, the things that motivate us to look after each other, and how hard we work and the things

we can accomplish when we are working at something we enjoy.

It’s true that we “give back” to the community.  But, I think I take more away from Sertoma that I have given. I know I have learned more than I contributed.  It has been a wonderful experience for me and I thank each and every one of you for making it so.
