On a personal note, I have sincerely enjoyed my Sponsorship role this past Sertoma year. None of the successes we have experienced would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of my faithful committee members. Special thanks to the following members for their undying support all year long:

SHARP (Sertoma Hearing Aid Recycling Program) Update
About a year and a half ago, Rufus Honeycutt, Dennis Graffious and I met to restart our club’s participation in the SHARP program. To kick off our drive to collect used hearing aids, we created new Round Rock Sertoma SHARP brochures and distributed them to Ears, Nose, Throat (ENT) doctor’s offices, nursing homes, pharmacies and other places, and are starting to see a regular stream of hearing aids coming in.
Our activity in this program is coordinated with the UT Speech and Hearing Center and the Northwest Austin Sertoma Club. Each quarter, UT makes available a limited number of examination slots at discounted rates for needy individuals with hearing disabilities. If hearing aids are required, they are drawn from the hearing aid bank and sent off to be rebuilt and refitted. Each year they fit 40 – 60 patients with recycled hearing aids. As part of their sponsorship activity, the Northwest Austin club has been picking up the cost to have these hearing aids refitted.
I’m pleased to say that we have been very successful in our outreach effort so far. We have collected 44 hearing aids to date and have sent them down to be added to the UT hearing aid bank. Dick Reid and the Sponsorship committee also recently helped to qualify and schedule a patient at UT for a full hearing exam. We’re still awaiting the results.
If you or anyone you know has hearing aids they no longer need, please contact me and we’ll continue to keep this program running strong. Thanks!
