The President's Message

Dear Fellow Sertomans:

Well this year is almost at an end.  June 4th, 2004, I will be turning in my President’s pin to our new President Matt Carson.  This does not mean that my Board will not fill out it's full term through 30 June 2004.  Tom and I will be leaving for a month long trip starting June 6th that’s why Matt will take over early.

I wish to thank all of my board members, and those members that stepped forward to become chairs for  Casino Night, Xmas Tree Lot, Golf Tournament, Baseball Banquet and of course all of our wonderful socials.  All of you have done a wonderful job and I greatly appreciated your efforts.

It has been a great year and a wonderful learning experience for me.  There is always something new to learn about Service to Mankind but, you won’t learn unless you become involved.  I urge all of our members, especially the new ones to get involved right away, join a committee; attend the meetings; meet your fellow Sertomans by sitting with them at the meetings and learning who they are.  The responsibility of the Sponsor does not end with bringing in a new member (which is great) but should continue with an introduction to other members and making sure that they do become involved.  In this way does our club continue to grow and become strong.

I especially would like to thank Deloris Schoenfeld, a new member who did become involved as Secretary this year.  Deloris was a dedicated and well organized secretary (and she didn’t think she could do it).  Thank you Deloris for a job well done.

My heartfelt gratitude goes to Kent Ochel for stepping in as Publisher of our newsletter on a moment’s notice (I’m not proud, I actually begged him).

I look forward to seeing all of you at our Annual Awards Banquet on June 4th, 2004.

Dottie Gill
President

Points of Interest

June is the sixth month of the year according to the Gregorian calendar, which is used in almost all the world today. June was the fourth month in the early Roman calendar, and it once had 29 days. The Romans later moved the beginning of the year to January 1, making June the sixth month.  When the Roman statesman Julius Caesar reformed the calendar in 46 B.C., he gave June 30 days.  Some authorities believe the Romans named the month for Juno, the patron goddess of marriage. Others trace the name to a family name, Junius. The Junius family was powerful and important throughout the early history of ancient Rome.
